Dis quand reviendras tu ? (Say when will you come back?)
First of all, the title of the exhibition is fantastic.
Its author Marc de Pierrefeu explains it this way!
“Black is a sublime light”
Barbara is one of those popular artists who are more than the sum of their songs. It is a mental space, a territory that cannot be completely mapped.
When Noëmi Waysfeld asked me to work on the visual environment for her album dedicated to Barbara, it filled me with joy, but also with fear. How to evoke Barbara without imitating her? How can we pay homage to her without betraying her?
The answer to these questions came quickly as I listened again to Barbara singing and talking about herself. She is not a dark monolith. Second degree and self-deprecation are the other side of her tragic face. The freedom that she has granted herself, in all areas of her life, is a powerful antidote to the shyness, even the complexes, that one could feel by getting too close to her figure.
Driven by this pre-commissioned work, I pushed the effrontery to the point of wanting to represent Barbara herself, as if emerging from a collective unconscious. The photos representing Noëmi Waysfeld are matched by portraits of Barbara.
Can we photograph the dead? I do believe it.
