Semana Santa
La Semana Santa (Holy Week) is the annual Catholic commemoration of the Passion of Christ. In Antigua, Guatemala, a beautiful old town, with cobbled streets, the entire city participates in the Semana Santa celebration. Daily processions where worshippers (men, women, or children) in purple, white or black robes carry enormous floats covered with life-size statues and religious images take place. The air is thick with incense, as devotees purify the path constantly replenishing their incense burners. Beautiful carpets of flowers are built on the streets, a unique Guatemalan tradition, as a short-lived offering to God, trampled by the heavy floats and the marchers.
