Unlike other photo festival during the European Month of Photography, the Hungarian Month of Photography is special because it takes place not only in the capital city but throughout the country, and its central location in Europe connects it to neighboring festivals in Slovakia and Austria.
The aim of the festival is to help photography gain a wider audience. Current artistic practices are showcased not only through exhibitions of local and international artists, but also through a series of programs—conferences, portfolio readings, workshops, screenings, book signings—initiating a dialogue between the public and the art world professionals.
Many schools have opened up their doors for the occasion and are exhibiting the work of up-and-coming artists. The work of students and professors from the following schools are part of the official program: the Szellemkép cultural space, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary; the organization FotóFalu, which is holding photography and filmmaking workshops for children for the 6th consecutive year; the Budapest art high school, founded 236 years ago, will commemorate the centenary of its photography department, founded by József Pécsi; and the University of Kaposvár, celebrating the 10th anniversary of its photography department.
