Swedish-American artist and photographer Florence Montmare‘s Scenes from an Island is a virtual exhibition and part of Fotografiska New York’s The Foto Sessions. Utilizing images, text, and video, a visual journey is played out against legendary director Ingmar Bergman’s mise-en-scène, the cinematic landscape on the remote island of Fårö, Sweden. During a year dominated by a global pandemic and civil unrest, many of us find ourselves trapped on our own islands. In Scenes, Montmare explores the human condition of isolation, displacement, and transience among the elemental conditions of a landscape where land meets water. The work is the culmination of five years of experimentation and process on the part of the artist, which she views “as a ritual and meditation on the need to connect with nature as the source of our existence. On the island, natural elements are stripped down and laid bare,” Montmare says, “allowing a contemplation of the rocks and sea to function as a mirror, and in reflection, you are able to see an essence of yourself.”
