Artist Statement

The medium of photography has been my oxygen and my drug since i first got seriously addicted in 1970.
Starting with selling pictures on the streets of Cleveland in the summer of 1970 for $7.00 a print, those early inhalations of darkroom fumes became an ever steadier fix in my firmament and in my daily life, and somehow the habit just got bigger and stronger with time.

My well-being was dependent on daily fixes of making photographs and processing and printing and sharing those images and it quickly became a life habit

To start a bit earlier, in my first 10 years, i went through countries and languages at a rapid clip, so by the time I arrived to learn English in the u.s.a. in 1956, English became my seventh language, and I was soon swimming in it with the fluidity of the other languages I had been using up to that time – Yiddish, German, Hebrew, Polish, French and Portuguese.

All these tongues were more than adequate to my needs, but when I found the universal language of photography – my real lingua franca – I had fully arrived, and I am happy to say it has been my breath and my drug and my foundation ever since.

Long live photography – that ever evolving and changing and adapting language and medium!

Some words about the series „2muse“:
The series is about the two performance artists Rosebud „Rosie“ Conway and Minami Azu, who both inspired Abe working together.
