The exhibition Foreign Familiar, created by Wolfgang Bellwinkel in 2011, brings together 9 photographers, 8 Europeans and 1 American. Their common goal is to live and work in Asia. They all have a particular vision on a both foreign and familiar society and culture, welcoming and inaccessible at the same time.
Their pictures are an invitation on a particular and subjective journey, taking us from giant Chinese cities to the quiet borders of the Mekong River, moving through Japan with its business men-always-in-a-hurry and end up in Bangkok-by-night, sometimes hostile and sordid.
Produced by the Goethe Institut, the exhibition is presented in several Asian countries and questions the position of photography in the societies it is showing: as seen from the outside (and here as foreigners) the photographers are observing also from the inside, the camera permiting to penetrate sites which are invisible to the naked eyes – invisibles borders.
Photographers on view : Ferit Kuya, Olivier Pin-Fat, Wolfgang Bellwinkel, Marrigje de Maar, Nick Nostitz, Bruno Quinquet, Peter Steinhauer, Laurence Leblanc, Graziella Antonini
