“You have to invent an island, lost in the night when it is day here, or bright on the other side of the Earth when sleep takes us; an island that is no more than a memory if indeed it was real, with its white flag with a red circle like the setting sun; you have to invent an island to listen to the rustle of cherry trees in the wind, and watch clouds of petals fall gently like ripples of snow each spring; an island where the vertical signs of electric towns sparkle in the first vermilion light of dusk; an island to see again the rice-powdered geikos of the Gion district of Kyoto, the white gloves of taxi drivers, the silk kimonos of the newlyweds of Izumo, the myriad of transparent umbrellas studded with rain walking through the streets of Osaka or Tokyo, and, on the north coast of Chugoku, the dunes of Tottori raised to Herculean heights on which climb, on hot days, the little silhouettes in the shade of their parasols; inventing an island to be stupefied by the charivari of pachinko marbles, to hear the roar of the Shinkansen on the railway tracks on the plains of Honshu; inventing an island when you want to remember the taste of saké in breweries with brick chimneys, and rediscover the smell of cold tobacco in hotel rooms to which, strangely, you end up getting used; because, once you have flown over the northern lands sleeping under the snow, the Siberian steppes frozen in the ice under the blue night sky of winter, when, back in Paris, day breaks, you have to invent an island to feel alone there and believe you are far away, and rediscover this feeling of Japan that you cannot resolve to leave behind.” – Thierry Clech
