For the first time, Loft Photo, based in Brussels, is hosting the photographic exhibition of a belgian photographer. Until December 31st the series re Birth by Florence d’Elle, a Belgian artist, is being shown to the public.
In re Birth, it is a matter of development. Yet everything – or almost everything – has been “invented” or “shown” in terms of “nude”, and particularly so, concerning the female nude.
If the point of departure of Florence d’Elle’s work seems to be that of academia and classicism, the progressive revelation of her images sows seeds of doubt. a questioning emerges then, the result of a shift in her vision, of her intention.
Certainly, while discovering the first images of the series, we think of an homage paid to feminine beauty. Yet, another thing interferes with the discovery of these photographs. The artist involves us without our knowledge in a detour, a by-road on which we realise that her portraits are much more complex than they appear. By using the same lighting on different bodies, young and sculptural or, on the contrary, submissive to the vagaries of time and the accidents of life, she calls into question our idea of beauty at the same time as our own relationship with the body. With great humanity and an undeniable artistic sense she restores that which is not or is little shown in the flood of images that is poured out by the media and advertising every day. The bodies shown by Florence d’Elle are those of more curvaceous women, with bodies less perfect, more generous. She connects with the great masters of Flemish painting, like Rubens, and invites equally into this pantheon older women on whose bodies life has left its marks in a way that is more genuine.
