Festival Photo de Brioude : Bruno Palisson : Le Geste du Saunier

Preview

The first Festival Photo de Brioude (43) runs until July 21st. Its theme is Les Gens de la terre (people of the earth).
We have chosen to show you the work of Bruno Palisson with his series Le Geste du Saunier (The gesture of the salt worker). He also sent us this text.

The series “Le Geste du Saunier” is a tribute to the profession of the Saunier, the operator of the salt marshes, connecting Man, the Earth and the Sea. The man, with deep respect for the soil, draws the fruit of his labor naturally and with patience, with the same gesture, since the 14th century. It was the Benedictine monks who created the salt marshes in the 7th century. At the same time I also wanted to show, “a positive image” that when the earth is worked, redesigned by man with deep respect for its true origins, he can let it renew itself without destruction, giving us a new raw, primary, viable, lasting and very aesthetic landscape. An immutable beauty preserved from the 7th century to the present day. With patience and the know how to do it well…

Hence this approach to a very designed, cut-out, geometric photo, hence the squarecomposed of mirrors and reflections, like the marshes are based on the idea that a work sends you back to what you want to find or what you are and therefore there an aesthetic, positive image through the example of the work of the Earth unchanged since the 7th century. Finally, I especially did not want to show a man, but all of us starting with the timeless gesture of the salt worker (hence the B&W) in a cultural landscape of contemporary graphics dating back to the Benedictines.
