The traveling exhibition of Sylvie Valem, at L’Atelier L’Œil Vert, released two series realized between 2017 and today. “53 rue Jean Rongière” (2017 – 2018) brings the visitor into the childhood of the photographer. She lived in a house with a garden in the street that gave her name to the series. Following the loss of her memory, the only souvenir that she keeps is a tree, a quince tree in which she climbed.
This photographic work is an initiative to create and to appropriate to herself her childhood memories. “Altitude 1110 meters” (2019), take us in the Jura, where the artist spent many winters. Her only memory is the snowy landscape. This work is the attempt of a recomposition of the memory.
I am a photographer.
At 38, I lose the ability to remember my past and to memorize my present effectively. Suddenly then the world is impalpable, I am as anesthetized; photography therefore participates in a possible and potential reconstruction of my story.
I go through life like a ghost, without looking carefully at what surrounds me, without being able to immerse myself in places. As soon as you see it, as soon as you forget it, the landscape disappears, becomes blurred, impalpable. Everything is ephemeral.
I swing from melancholy to sadness, from confinement to suffocation. Nature, trees, the sky are a constant evidence of myself, of my history, of what is happening, of what has been passed, of the past from which I lose all substance.
