For the summer of 2018, Chateau la Coste will inaugurate a new permanent work bySophie Calle with a two part exhibition.
Having taken the time to carefully choose a site on the property, Calle is developing a gravesite in the Provençal woods that is both an installation and a site for performance. This piece continues themes the artist has recently explored in tombstone works that were installed in Brooklyn (2017) and Geneva (2016). Death, loss and love are issues addressed throughout Calle’s work, and most importantly the processes we create to deal with such moments in public and in private. This is a grave for our secrets, as Calle invites visitors to note their most private moments on paper, and “bury” them through the post box of the tombstone.
Elsewhere, similar themes are explored in two exhibitions that include a series of large black and white tombstone photographs laid out on one gallery floor, her more recent “Autobiography” series, and her seminal work “Exquisite Pain”, the first time this has been shown in France since her 2004 exhibition at the Centre Pompidou.
