Pierrot Men is a Malagasy photographer born in 1954. Awarded several prizes and winner of the Mother Jones – San Francisco competition in 1994, he has been photographing for 40 years the Island of Madagascar where he owns his photographic laboratory.
The photographs of Pierrot Men have a rare intensity of light and are marked by tenderness, sensitivity and lucidity. His work showcases Madagascar, the land into which he was born and grew up, and its changing society as it confronts its future. A timeless and universal subject.
Without taking sides or judging, Pierrot Men wants above all to show the beauty of his country. The beauty of the landscapes, the beauty of the people. The aesthetics as well as the composition of his photos reveal more forcefully the cultural richness, the depth of soul of the Malagasy people and the extraordinary diversity of the island’s heritage, whose balance and safeguard are constantly threatened. The artist’s poetic, sometimes dreamlike vision places man at the heart of the subject. He knows that he is intrinsically linked to his environment, with complex and sometimes tragic development issues. Pierrot Men wants to believe in a reconciliation, where harmony is possible.
Internationally renowned, Pierrot Men regularly exhibits worldwide and recently presented his work at the Festival Photo Saint-Germain in Paris and at the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. Several of his photos can be seen at the Capazza gallery (Nançay – Cher/ France).
