Nick Stout, an American, is a longtime resident of the 11th arrondissement of Paris. These images of his neighborhood — made between 2012 and 2017 — are part of a larger project on the “backside” of Parisian streets.
These photographs are essentially documentary: a particular record of Paris in our time. At a deeper level, they play to the imagination of viewers by depicting people and objects in alien contexts. Remember that we are not always where we think we are. But let’s not be too serious. At the least, I hope the kaleidoscopic nature of the images makes them pleasant to contemplate. –– NS
