On the outskirts of Paris, the “Lavoir-Bains-douches municipal” of Gentilly will be reborn in 2020 in a completely renewed form and will become the “Lavoir Numérique”: a unique cultural establishment, resolutely turned towards audiovisual creation. A place for dissemination (exhibitions, screenings, debates, concerts, shows) and practice (workshops, internships, residencies), its programming is punctuated quarterly by Sequences and questions the broad digital sphere from the perspective of image and sound.
The Lavoir Numérique and the Maison Doisneau are managed by the same team: a dialogue that allows us to navigate between 20th century photography and 21st century images, to observe our current audiovisual landscape, to explore its sources and its future. Le Lavoir Numérique encourages everyone to keep their eyes wide open and their ears open. ”
The inaugural exhibition of Le Lavoir Numérique, “Écrans partagés”, opens a first door: that of photography. A technological medium invented almost 200 years ago. Is photography still the same after 31 years of the Web? What new images are born from the Net? How do we look at the world now?
To try to answer these questions, the team of Le Lavoir Numérique turned to Diaph 8, a collective of artists, thinkers and practitioners of photography, all from the Photography and Contemporary Art program at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes – Saint-Denis. ”
