The baudoin lebon gallery is pleased to present Nicolas Guilbert. True to his sensitivity and humour, the artist offers poetic compositions on paper, mixing drawings, photographs, inks and collages… These drawings will be accompanied by miniature cabinets of curiosities, the «Iconoboxes», which deliver, in a wooden case, Nicolas Guilbert’s dreamlike world.
About the artist
Nicolas Guilbert is a painter, draughtsman and photographer. Born in 1958 in Paris, he paid tribute to Coco, a photograph by Robert Doisneau, in his first exhibition of drawings (1984). He then published several books of drawings and his collages, drawings and “Photoiles” were exhibited in several Parisian galleries during the 1990s and 2000s.
His use of the stroke and the paper media is central in his highly graphic pictorial work while his images mix report on the spot, sensitivity to the unusual and humour. His photographic work was revealed by Animaux & Cie (Grasset, 2010), and then by Animonuments Un Voyage Sentimental a Travers La France [Animonuments, a sentimental journey across France], which was exhibited at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature and at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2011.
In 2014, the Mougins Museum of Photography exhibited “Connivences”, a photographic dialogue with/between the artist and Patrick Zachmann (Magnum). In 2015, his best images on the theme of animality were exhibited at the Flair Galerie (Arles).
Paris Paradis, un journal photographique [Paris Paradise, a photographic journal] (Flammarion, 2015), the result of thirty years of photography across the capital, sums up the best his classic and playful style. Early 2018, he was invited by the curator of the Palais-Royal to exhibit some sixty photographs from Paris Paradis in the middle of the domain.
Nicolas Guilbert has been focusing for several years on a new series of works entitled “IconoBox” including all the media he uses and for the first time sculpture. His creations were then exhibited at La Folie Saint-Martin (Paris Xe), a private venue that was acquired in May-June 2018 by a couple of collectors. At the end of 2021 “Voir & Regarder l’Art” (Hersher editions)
He gathered 245 images created during 35 years all around the world, from Naples to New York, from Rotterdam to Madrid, from Bâle to Los Angeles and from Paris to the greatest Italian museums, encompass his work focusing on the great museums, galleries and art fairs.
