In his passionate quest to capture these snapshots of intense life, David Rouge suddenly finds himself repositioned on the Earth’s scale, so small, in his rightful place. Such humility in the face of nature provokes in him a sense of vulnerability, so lacking in man. The environment in which the adventurous photographer evolves melts, inexorably. Crossing a frozen river on foot in the dead of winter, his biggest scare, is a case in point. But this untamed nature fascinates him, and the thrill of discovering an unknown land devoid of landmarks never changes. The Arctic has definitely got him.
“I wanted this book to be both artistic and intimate. It will help you discover the magic of these mummified landscapes, the purity of this icy universe, the artistic talents of Mother Nature and the daily life of the photographer in search of the wildlife of these northern countries. It is also poetry, in the form of texts that reflect the feelings experienced during my travels and serve as a guide for the reader in this exploration of the Arctic under extreme conditions. Finally, it is the culmination of seven years’ hard work, doubts and disappointments, but above all, emotions, wonder, understanding and respect.”
This beautiful book is an invitation. An invitation to reflect, to share emotion, to reconnect with the fragility of the extreme wilderness, and to enter the photographer’s diary. Texts, poems and images punctuate this photographic journey full of sweetness and color.
