“One day I met Eva. She had such an angry expression on her face and looked so scared that she scared me. Was she not going to come out of the all-black drawing I had in front of me that represented her?
When I later began to look at the print of a photo of a sunflower, it was Eva who appeared to me again, she was the sunflower, tormented, her hair as if blown down by the wind, on a stormy day. This encounter with a universe which merges into another, these two images which speak to each other secretly, this “Eva-Tournesol” produced in me a surprise but also a silent joy.
This is the start of this series of photos …
Little by little light appears, a lot of light until saturation. The flowers transform into silhouettes and tiny details, imperceptible to the naked eye, are revealed as if the eye were transformed into a microscope to enter the threshold of the invisible. On the way to “wither”, subtleties of colors and expressions. Dance movements which express joy, sadness, perhaps a death call. Or still postures reminiscent of the Butō dance, “dance of the dark body”. I blend in with the plant, which has become hallucinatory and dangerous. Then I walk away, the photos become more abstract, like deep black ink stains until the image disappears. ”
Toshio Shimamura
With “Eva”, Toshio Shimamura returns to his favorite motif of flowers. In front of the artist’s lens, these “still lifes” revealed in a traditional way on film, come to life. Through the play of their shapes and textures, subtly sculpted by light, they express their personified character in an apparent stillness. And the image that the photographer sends us back with finesse is also that between frozen vanity and dance of death, of the imperceptible movement of passing time, a poetry of universal beauty.
