Denis Roche’s book published by Lamaindonne under the title Les Nonpareilles groups together for a visual experience a collection of sixty photographs of which fifteen were previously unpublished, that testify to the taste of this great photographer and writer, who died in 2015,
This book goes beyond the traditional approach of his work, often limited to autobiography and differ strikingly by the layout: photographs shown mainly alone, full page and bled-off, a graphic choice which serves to bring to the front the formal qualities of these images. It shows how Denis Roche’s relationship with the photographic avant-garde and his questioning of the usual codes influence his way of foreseeing the shot: the formalism of nudes, reflections, angles and perspectives, choice of two successive contacts.
A putting into practice what Denis Roche called, “The imperious need of structure, lines and shapes”, without ever renouncing the jubilant part, the sudden appearance of the unexpected, or the sentimental mission of the photographic act. A beautiful book, full of poetry.
