“PARIS/NYC” is the result of fifteen years of photography in these two mythical cities, which are close to photographer David Bacher’s heart. The project was published in a photo book in 2020 by the publisher Lammerhuber in Vienna, Austria.
The Paris/NYC exhibition is presented first at Initial and will then travel to other cities in France. David Bacher began photographing in Paris upon his arrival in 2004 and later in New York in 2008. Particularly fascinated and inspired by humanist photographers such as Vivian Maier, Henri-Cartier Bresson or Robert Frank, among many others, David is interested in the nuances in everyday life that are often overlooked or not noticed. Scanning the city with his fluide eye, he captures with his camera the emotions of the people around him. Sometimes he juxtaposes several elements on different shots.
According to Carole Naggar “David often creates trompe-l’oeil or he upsets perspectives, giving reflets and shadows a presence as real as the bodies and faces that populate the theater of his streets.” In the book’s preface she also noted, “while not overtly political, Bacher nevertheless excels at indirect and subtle social commentary and captures the incongruities and contradictions of everyday life, especially interracial and cultural discrepancies.”
By playing on the effets of globalization the photographer invites his viewer to reflect and often hesitate to determine in which city the photographs were taken. It is these different levels of complexity that force us to study each image carefully. David Bacher likes photographs that are direct and understandable but at the same time encourage us to ask questions. He sees his images as a way to play with the world.
