European press review by Michel Philippot

What a week! I don’t know where to turn. France went to Bamako, and in the grand tradition of the French army: “Move along, nothing to see there…”

There was a large show of support against gay marriage in Paris this week. You can see in these photos, the same faces as a few years ago during the debate over civil unions. By examining the faces of the children, it’s possible to guess the limited experience they’ve been given by their hard-working fathers and good-looking mothers. As for the the costumes of these poor children, marching in uniform, what class!

When looking at photography archives, we can be overcome with nostalgia, allowing us to examine our present, often with a certain sadness.

And then there’s the ongoing hostage situation in Algeria, which we’ll cover next week if there are photos. Did you all know about the 1904 Battle of Waterberg, the Herero people? I didn’t. Thanks to Jim Naugten for filling in the gaps of my knowledge. And there’s still Syria. What are we to make of all this? We can only look at the photos… Good day, good night, and good week!
