This is the final review of the year. It’s time to take stock—but don’t count on me to do it. You won’t find any judgment here, qualitative or quantitative. Newspapers, the ones that still exist, continue publishing photos—less than before, certainly, but they’re still going, and let’s hope it lasts.
The Sunday Times Magazine published a retrospective selection of worthy photographs. This is always a difficult exercise for photo directors. Selecting one photograph to represent an event is, of course, a subjective choice. One tries to strike a balance between the editor and the reader. The ideal photograph isn’t always a reflection of some event, and the event doesn’t always have a photograph to reflect it. There was a time when photographers looked forward all year to the December issues of Time and Newsweek, which published selections of the year’s best pictures. It was a tremendous honor to have one’s work included.
