Flea Market
These photographs are integral to a new project documenting a Flea Market in Northern California. Having served as a cultural and economic hub since 1960, redevelopment plans have significantly altered the market. In 2021, the land was acquired by developers who intend to construct an Urban Village encompassing residential, commercial, and retail spaces. As of 2023, the market has been reduced to a smaller portion of its original site, with numerous vendors relocating or closing their businesses. The community’s response has been divided. While some perceive redevelopment as a necessary catalyst for urban growth, others lament the loss of a historically and culturally significant space. The long-term future of the Flea Market remains uncertain. Despite its continued operation in a diminished capacity, its integration into the new development is still in the process of negotiation.
