Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry is a work of art that investigates the skill of the photographic witness. It is the culmination of face-to-face encounters with many of the most original photographers of our time. For over eight years photographer and author Penny Wolin traveled relentlessly across America, photographing and interviewing more than 70 of the leading and most original Jewish photographers in history. This book is the culmination of these unprecedented face-to-face encounters.

“My father’s family on his father’s side is from Italy. Then they moved to Morocco for 4 generations, and then my grandfather moved to Israel in the early 20th century. My grandmother was from Halab, Syria. My grandmother on my mother’s side was born in Israel, but her family came from Spain. My grandfather’s family came from Uzbekistan. I have chosen to be in exile by living in New York and not Israel.”
“We make photographs to remember who we are and what our lives were.”
