Aperture announces Eli Durst as the winner of the 2016 Aperture Portfolio Prize! Durst’s series on the East African city of Asmara reflects the moods of a singular urban landscape. With the world’s largest collection of intact modernist buildings, Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is defined by relics of Italian colonialism in Africa—villas, hotels, and factories—all built before World War II. Turning away from the spectacle of visionary architecture in decay, however, Durst found the life going on around the buildings to be more captivating than the buildings themselves.
