Solitary Tides: The Pier Fishermen of San Diego
In the predawn silence, when the sky shivers in the first light, “Solitary Tides” captures the lone fishermen on the San Diego piers. This collection of images delves into the quietude of fishermen casting lines into the Pacific’s depths, seeking not just bait fish but also solace in the sea’s vastness. Each image is a study in isolation, with the cold, early light and dark motifs accentuating the singularity of their pursuit.
My visual goal was to chronicle the act of fishing, capture the misty and foggy mornings and to create artwork that explores the complex tapestry of human emotions in our quietest moments. Instead of sharp edges and vivid colors, I sought to envelop my subjects in a dreamlike fog, mirroring the haziness of the early morning mist. I deliberately used a soft focus and a darker aesthetic to capture the feelings of isolation and convey the detached atmosphere surrounding these fishermen. The intentional muted and dark colors of the images provide a visual expression of the early cold damp mornings, as well as the sense of personal seclusion and detachment.
“Solitary Tides” is an ode to those who find company in the distant horizon, the rhythm of the waves, and a sense of identity in the day’s first cast.
