When Hans Silvester showed me the design of his latest album and asked me to write a presentation for it, I was really amazed by the quality of his superb photographs. We immediately agreed that for such a work, a preface, a preamble, a presentation, an exordium or any other development would be absurd. Each photograph is a poem resulting from the communion between the Horse and the Photographer. It is therefore a short story, in just a few lines, which has come to rest and become embedded in this very beautiful album.
Everyone knows Hans Silvester and his very beautiful photographs which combine to form coherent sets on the different facets of a specific subject. That and only that is the trademark of a good photographer. When, in addition, the images invite you to move into other worlds, other places, other stories or other emotions, that’s what a great photographer is.
But let’s start with all those great photographs. The book offers you an excellent technique very adapted to the subject treated. Each composition, each light incidence, each color rendering, each depth of field contributes to the poetic and harmonious magic of each image. However, the work of shooting, delicate and dangerous at the same time, was spread over many years in this very specific Camargue universe. No false poetic note in the rendering of the technical work of the photographer.
And then there is all the rest of the image, with the talent of the great photographer, the indefinable little zest that makes all the difference in his intimate communication with his subjects. There is the fleeting moment; but with minute precision, from the shutter release to the correct shutter speed. There is life trapped by light in an unlikely conjunction. Finally, there is everything that we forget to teach now, everything that we neglect to exhibit today, everything that makes a work of Art in the making. Everything in this album that crosses all cultures.
