Pray for Seamen by Francesco Bellina is the star exhibition of the Palermo festival: Between Land And Sea.
Investigating the degradation of small-scale fishing and port communities through human stories, Pray For Seamen, tells a story of bonds: that between humans and the sea, between fishing and the city, between the changing climate and a profession that has to deal with it on a daily basis. But also the more unexpected ones: the ties between three places that make their living from fishing and between people who, despite having a sea to share their lands, share a common horizon.
The work takes place in Trapani, Bellina’s hometown, on the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia and in Accra, Ghana, once thriving ports for artisanal fishing, now being crushed by globalization, exploitation and the influence of global warming; in addition, large-scale industrial fishing practices have also intervened on this already delicate ecosystem, depleting the oceans and impoverishing both fishermen and the environment.
