Preview

Dogwoof has unveiled the new poster and trailer for Lee Shulman‘s film on Martin Parr, set to hit UK and Ireland theaters on February 21, 2025.
Here is the trailer for the film I Am Martin Parr.

Since the 1970s, British documentary photographer Martin Parr has fearlessly held out his unique photographic mirror and given us some of the most iconic images of the past century. Through an intimate and exclusive road trip across England with the artist, director Lee Shulman (The Anonymous Project) uncovers the life of Magnum photographer Parr: an ironic chronicler of British kitsch, a fierce critic of consumerism, and a narrator of stories suspended between comedy and tragedy – who has so often been misunderstood.

Sometimes serious, often absurd, but always playful, Martin Parr’s insightful and acrid commentary on consumer society has been the subject of much debate and discussion. While his work is now showcased globally, Parr is one of the most controversial contemporary photographers of his time.  His early photography faced challenges and criticism for seemingly trivialising the working class. Bright and saturated, his use of garish colour was previously reserved for advertising and fashion. Holding up a sometimes tender, sometimes critical and always mischievous mirror to our times, Parr’s distinctive photographic language forces us to confront the absurd reality of life.

Compiled from exclusive archival footage alongside interviews from various individuals in Martin’s life – close family, fellow photographers, artists and filmmakers, from artist Grayson Perry to musician Mark Bedford (Madness) – I Am Martin Parr offers a portrait of an extraordinary photographer who revolutionised contemporary photography by inventing a political, humanist and accessible photographic language.

As they journey from his hometown of Bristol – which is also home to Martin’s acclaimed photography Foundation – to the seaside resort of New Brighton, where Parr reshoots his renowned work ‘The Last Resort’  40 years later, the film revisits key moments in Parr’s career that shaped the way we see photography today.
