My name is Daniel Sands, I live in Dorset in the South of England. My day job is computer programmer, and photography has been a hobby for a few years now. Prior to the lockdown my main areas of photography were landscapes and weddings, but with travel off the cards when lockdown struck in March 2020 I was left searching for other avenues to take photos of – I tried a number of different “staying creative at home” photography projects, before trying my hand at some Lego photography. It started off very basic, I made a make-shift home studio from some bits of old KNEX my son had lying around, and a piece of yellow card. From there I tried various different techniques to generate some of the images you see in this collection. I find great joy in being able to say that I use various household items in my photography, and avoid any expensive kit lists – I use baking powder as a substitute for snow, and use a lens blower to turn that powder into the “smoke” you see in many of my images. I’ve gone on to make my own YouTube channel “Bricks from Another Galaxy” which goes over some of the techniques I use, and shows various behind the scenes setups.
