Czech photography –Tereza Vlčková

Preview

Tereza Vlčková, born 1983, is at present one of the most prominent female photographers on the Czech young artistic scene and her photographs have attained international fame as well. The authoress is producing series of large-format color photographs, which powerfully attack the viewer not only with their formal and technical refinement but also with their mysterious content, unsettling the viewer and raising disturbing questions.…

In these photographs, Vlckova plays with images of girls or young women, planting them into a dreamlike landscape environment. The genesis of each series takes many months, but we do not feel the complexity of the execution in the result. Everything seems to be in a perfect harmony: a well thought-out composition, refined colors, dramatic light, and absence of unnecessarily distracting details.

Vlckova’s creative work, showing hints of portrait and fashion photography and often consciously testing the borders of kitsch, is not as consistent as it might seem at first sight – the author is constantly looking for new possibilities and paths.

“Two” by Tereza Vlčková:

“How easy it is to change the reality. To replace the reality with fiction and vice versa…. To create a new person. We all have our alter ego. The Other Self which one carries “within” himself/herself or a Somebody who is affiliated with us both mentally and physically – our twin… In this series I also tried to undermine the established role of a child associated with characteristic qualities such as loveliness, playfulness and childishness. I wanted to point out the children’s personality. The photographs have been freely inspired by classical painting, religious images and films.”
