Craig Fineman –Skateboard Culture

Preview

For those interested in 70’s skateboard culture the space on the bookshelves is becoming more and more of an issue. Craig Fineman’s ’Pools’ is the latest must-have to squeeze in between other illustrated photography books like Dogtown: The Legend of the Z-Boys (2002), The Legacy of Warren Bolster: Master of Skateboarding Photography (2004) and Locals Only: California Skateboarding 1975 to 1978 (2010).

It´s the street fashion brand Stussy who teamed up with Dashwood Books to release ’Pools’ – a limited edition book featuring never-before-seen photographs by the influential surf and skate photographer. The series of shots present an intimate look at a late 1970′s pool skating session captured in black and white, in Fineman’s groundbreaking and almost architectural style.

Fineman started documenting the thriving late 70s skate and surf scene, fusing action sports with fine art photography. Showcasing a strong sense for proportion and unique angles his photos did not only capture the essence of surfing and skateboarding but also emitted a strong architectural aesthetique, resulting in a groundbreaking body of work that was truly ahead of its time. Fineman died in 2003, aged 51.
