Yes, it’s already been 20 years since Claude Nougaro, the Toulouse cantor, left us. Born into music to a baritone father at the Paris Opera and a mother who won first prize in piano at the National Conservatory of Music. This kid, with an eventful life, was stuck between the freedom of his poetry and the rhythm of the played notes.
A character, a temperament as we said at the time in “showbiz” circles. It is on part of his chaotic and random path that the musical author and the photographic author, Luc Douche, take a part of the road. One is on tour, the other stores a flood of images both on stage and in the life of work and preparation.
So, for the anniversary of his death, Claude’s repertoire is reflected through his musicians of the time or young singers fascinated by the repertoire, Luc is bringing out his films from the time and scanned the best images.
These forgotten images will be used to illustrate his novel on the singer’s life and to build a photographic portfolio, to better understand the author with his captivating rhythms, Nougaro. Claude, the singer with the inimitable voice, is captured in his very personal movements.
The resurrected images, in their construction and restitution, betray the uncertainties of the musical creator. Through the treatments of contrast, it is the rigorous and professional gestures that freeze the man for the time he will remain in the collective memory. Apart from the books, the photographs are displayed in the traveling exhibition which illustrates the various manifestations of memory.
A book for the discotheque of Claude Nougaro fans and for all photographers linked to the world of musical entertainment.
