Clervaux, A City Dedicated to Photography

Preview

A city where photo exhibitions are open-air and accessible to everyone, both residents and visitors for a day.

Located in Luxembourg, the City of Images of Clervaux hosts six exhibition venues open year-round. The city already had a photographic heritage: for several decades, it has hosted the exhibition The Family of Man, conceived by the former curator of MoMA, Edward Steichen, a native of the Grand Duchy.

The cultural program is enriched by educational workshops and artist residencies. The free admission and outdoor installations make this place unique.

Every two years, the City of Image of Clervaux organizes a photography contest open to artists residing in Luxembourg or the Greater Region, as well as Luxembourgers living abroad. Candidates must create a photo project on a theme of their choice. The first prize is a grant of 10,000 euros. This year, the work of photographer Nazanin Hafez received the jury prize. Originally from Iran and a student in Mainz, the young woman presented her series Discreet, dedicated to the role of screens in our lives.

“I was fascinated by the blue light of the screens that illuminated the faces of my loved ones,” explains Nazanin Hafez. “I photographed my family and friends without making them pose, in order to capture their most natural features. Screens are reshaping our lifestyles: we are no longer accustomed to solitude and silence. This constant stimulation gives us the illusion of being indispensable. After this series, I would like to continue this project and extend it to other technologies.”

Ten photos from Nazanin Hafez’s Discreet series are currently on display in the City of Image of Clervaux. Accessible year-round, the exhibitions are renewed in October. They attract local visitors as well as tourists passing through this region of the Our, a crossroad to Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
