For the past eight years, Christophe Jacrot’s photographs have portrayed the fragility of the big cities of the northern hemisphere in a unique project focused on adverse weather events. To coincide with the launch of his book, Météores, published by Editions h’Artpon, Galerie de l’Europe in Paris is hosting an eponymous exhibition running from December 3rd to January 16th and showing a selection of fifteen or so images from the 90 featured in the book. Two other exhibitions are presented in Switzerland: Galerie Art Passions (Geneva) from 8 December to 16 January and Urs von Unger Gallery (Gstaad) from 18 January to 3 February.
Météores is a poetic-sounding title but it evokes some physical realities and that is certainly apt for Jacrot’s project. According to the dictionary, the word ‘meteor’ can mean any atmospheric phenomenon, such as snow, rain, storms and so on. “I tried to capture the permanent element of weather phenomena – their part of eternity,” explains the photographer who contrasts the impermanence of the metropolises with the whims of the weather. These big cities are like giants with clay feet – diminished and disrupted by a mere rain or snow storm.
Each exhibition will show photographs shot in the world’s biggest cities, but they will also be an opportunity to discover some more recent images taken by Jacrot in Iceland, as he gives his work a new focus. There are no streets and no living souls in these pictures, only traces of humanity left on the pure white snow in landscapes whose breathtaking beauty is rivalled only by their inhospitality. Here, the confrontation with nature is even more powerful.
