Photographer Vincent Peal presents his new book Rites & cérémonies d’Asie du Sud-Est published by Timeless Edition, dedicated to religious rites and ceremonies in Asia, through a show-presentation which is held until March 30th at the Chapelle du Grand Hospice in Brussels.
Through his lens, Vincent Peal explores the often overlooked cultural and spiritual practices that shape Asian communities, which he immersed himself into during a long journey between Indonesia and Japan, returning to Europe via the Trans-Siberian Railway from Beijing to Moscow. He captured powerful moments, such as the Thaipusam festival in Malaysia, where ceremonial acts of sacrifice are performed to balance a spiritual debt. He also followed the faithful during Holy Week in the Philippines, where some share the suffering of Christ through flagellation and even crucifixion. In Borneo, he encountered the Tatung mediums, who, through trance and self-mutilation, repel evil spirits.
“Making portraits is first and foremost about getting closer to others and transmitting moments of life. In the street, I saw dozens of faces, each one telling incredible stories, hard, beautiful, funny and sometimes complicated; but, in these faces there is a whole universe to discover.” – Vincent Peal
