The Centre de la photographie de Mougins presents an exhibition by Anna Niskanen: Point sublime.
By using traditional photographic techniques, we try, while it is still possible, to resist the standardization of prints, a consequence of digital techniques.
A photographic print by its uniqueness is more than an artisanal refuge, it affirms a principle of life, a way of paying homage to nature, a refusal of the inevitable ecological peril. The cyanotype, this Prussian blue, and the gum dichromate, this earthy pigment, reflect here a residency carried out in Mougins by Anna Niskanen, photographer of Finnish origin.
The prints, blue for the Mediterranean and ocher for the hinterland, in the form of large formats, are intended to capture the places, burned by the sun. There is, on the outskirts of Mougins, a beautiful and wild region, but also a damaged coast, a wounded mountain. This sums up the unique experience of the photographer facing complex landscapes, admitting that they are only simple poetic artifacts, and the affirmation of a game with the picturesque, with its own memories. As if the fabric of the landscape protected us, could comfort us.
Anna Niskanen’s photography finds in the making of images these primitive passions and emotional spontaneity which oppose each other, modestly,
to the false rationality of the world. An invisible presence that only the sun is able to reveal.
Under the sun exactly.
