“Today, if a negative does not print simply and easily, I throw it away,” wrote Ralph Steiner in 1978.
“My life as an advertising photographer,” he added, “was so coupled with tension and insecurity that as often as I could I mixed my work with humor. [This] is what I did to avoid certification to a mental hospital when told to photograph a plate of ham and eggs. In God’s name, how does one photograph a plate of ham and eggs? My escape was to amuse myself.”
