The Frac Normandie contemporary arts centre in Caen is hosting the exhibition ORLAN Today, focused on the artist’s work from the 1970s to the present day. The show draws a line from her performance art to the recent video game, and from her scandalous operations to her artistic and human positions regarding the current social and cultural context.
Since 1964, ORLAN has questioned the status of the body and the social, cultural, political and religious pressures it is subject to. She challenges scientific, technological and medical discoveries, while advocating hybridisation, tolerance and human rights through nomadic, ever-changing identities. She uses a variety of techniques including photography, video, sculpture, drawing, installations, performance, biotechnology and augmented reality.
Taking her own body as her starting point, ORLAN creates a portrait of society where the fun of the game and of theatricality are permitted and are especially prevalent in her performances, her elaborate productions, her experiments with video images, the more recent hybrid personalities and use of augmented reality.
Alongside the exhibition, a more recent work entitled Experimentale mise en jeu will be presented from 25 June onwards at Saint Sauveur church. In this work, ORLAN subverts video game conventions, reconstructing a universe where the serial killer is no longer treated as a hero and the visitor is immersed in the virtual action.
