Brazil: João Castilho, winner of the Zum/IMS Award 2013

Preview

Launched last year by the magazine Zum and the Institut Moreira Salles, the Zum/Ims Prize helps two photographers complete their photo projects. Winner of the first edition, João Castilho is currently working on the series Zoo, where wild animals take over domestic spaces.

How did you come to participate in the first edition of the Zum/Ims Prize?

I started taking pictures during my studies  at the University of Puc Minas in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Paisagem Submersa (Submerged Landscapes) was my first major subject. The result was widely exhibited and published by Cosac Naify.

In 2013, Zum made a call for submissions. I was already working on the project Zoo, so I submitted! The prize has allowed me to devote myself entirely to the project. I was able to put together a small team and cover production costs. This has been my most complex project since Paisagem Submersa.
