Braschler/Fischer : Everest Diary 3

Preview

We made it! We have arrived at Everest Base Camp at 5300 Meter! The higher we climbed on our trek, the more expensive everything got. But unfortunately and understandably at these heights, you pay more for less. But after spending our first night in a tent on the glacier, in sub zero temperatures (inside and outside of the tent) we realized that even an overpriced lodge has its advantages. At least the water bottles don’t freeze at night there, as happened to Rob.

ABOUT THE IMAGES

(Photo 1) Mathias and Rob with Ganza on top of Dughla Pass, after another acclimatization hike. Ganza was in charge of Mathias’ camera gear all the way up to Base Camp. By the end of the trip he was the perfect assistant and knew the exact place for each piece of equipment and when it would be needed.

(Photo 2) Ama Dablam, Kangtega and Thumsenku, at dusk, seen from Dughla.

(Photo 3) Another hard climb we had to do before Gorak Shep, breaking the 5000 meter mark, on our last day of trekking. Having tried to keep pace with these porters, laden with 40 kg loads, compared to our 8 kg packs, has given us a new appreciation of their strength and determination.

(Photo 4) Base Camp on 5300 meter, our residence for the next 10 days. Our welcome was a bit frosty… 30 minutes after our arrival our new home was hit by a snow storm.

(Photo 5) Mathias shooting some landscapes at the lower end of the famous Khumbu Icefall, watched over by Latchu, our trusted guide. The blue sky is actually misleading. Two hours later it started snowing again.
