Rachel Marsden and the ARTicle Gallery of Birmingham have joined forces to organized a rare joint exhibition of young Chinese and English artists. The seventeen artists, brought together for the first time, explore notions of temporality, especially in the context of large modern cities.

Marsden, a young curator who works in both China and the UK, has spent the past five years researching the cream of the British and Chinese art scenes at studios and exhibitions, and she has now brought together the young generation’s most incredible and promising talents.

The Temporary offers a wide variety of works in different media, from video, music, performance, installation and graphic design to photography, which plays a fundamental role in the exhibition. Chinese artists like Fan Shi San, Li Hui, Mengxi Zhang, Xiaoxiao Xu and Xie Jiankun meet their European counterparts, like the twins Anthony and Phillip Reed, Peter Dixie, Daniels Langeberg and Liz Hingley. The works are exhibited side by side, forming a mosaic with flexible boundaries and a captivating visual dialogue about the conception of time, space, and transience in cities.

Three photographers in particular caught my attention. First, Li Hui, the young self-taught photographer plunges viewers into a very personal and sensitive world, where the body is more hidden than revealed through color, light and shadow effects. The photographer Peter Dixie specializes in architecture. His series Hinterland puts a face on the outskirts of Shanghai, places which he calls, “landscapes of possibility.” Finally, Anthony and Phillip Reed blur the lines and strike viewers with their precise, elegant and ethereal compositions of urban landscapes.
