Birgit Kleber : Photographers

Preview

Birgit Kleber presents her book project Photographers in these words.

The focus of my work is the portrait. As a portrait photographer I have made a name for myself beyond Berlin and developed my own signature. My work was recently shown in three large solo exhibitions at the Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt, the Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin and the Haus am Kleistpark Berlin.

Since the early 1990s I have been photographing internationally known photographers whose work fascinates me. A long-term project. There are currently over 100 portraits – a who-is-who of photography – Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Alec Soth, Wolfgang Tillmans, to name just a few. And many who have sadly passed away – Gisèle Freund, Michael Wolf, F.C. Gundlach, Peter Lindbergh, Michael Schmidt, Sabine Weiss – photography history.

The portraits are black and white, I work with daylight and staged postures that encourage concentration and, at best, make something visible for a split second. I focus on the eyes and want the subjects to look at the viewer from within the image. That is the signature of my work.

I am very happy that the renowned Kehrer Verlag wants to make a book out of this work. The book will have a large format, 24 x 30 cm, 144 pages with a text by Dr.Matthias Harder (Helmut Newton Foundation).

Since even successful publishers are now dependent on financial grants and funding to adequately realize their high-quality books, this campaign is a way for me to raise the necessary amount and, moreover, to draw attention to my project.
