Over the course of four years, Bernard Ciancia photographed the working class of his region (Isère, France). Pascal Kober had this to say about this work on the memory of the working class:
“What happened to the working class? In our globalized, deindustrialized society, where we tend to glorify new technology and the service industry, we’ve almost forgotten that millions of people put on their overalls every morning and go to work, tool in hand and helmet strapped to their head. These are the faces, sometimes smiling, sometimes tense, sometimes mocking, that the photographer Bernard Ciancia photographed over the course of four years and in several companies. It is a tribute to these men and women of the shadows who hold up our economy with their grease-stained hands. The result? A portrait gallery that speaks tenderly of the work environment and conditions. For the occasion, large metal prints have been hung in the museum’s hall. A beautiful catalogue accompanies the exhibition.”
