Belfast Photo Festival presents this project by renowned Italian photographer Guido Mocafico. Recognised as a contemporary master of still life photography, for this project Mocafico set out to document a collection of impressive glass models created by celebrated glass artists, Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka. Using his unique style, Mocafico photographed these masterpieces, paying homage to the skill of these master craftsmen, while also drawing our attention to the array of sea creatures we risk losing as a result of climate change.
To create the still life images, Mocafico illuminates each object against a stark black background, capturing the minute details of each piece and bringing the sculptures to life. In doing so, his work blurs the lines between reality and artifice, and leave the viewer unsure as to whether what they are seeing is real or not. Challenging us to consider whether these creatures exist or not, his works are a stark reminder that without greater care for our environment, many creatures from the deep sea will eventually be lost to climate change; their existence relegated to museums, and Mocafico’s photographic representation.
