The refuse dump at Akouédo in Abidjan has existed since 1945. The first and only public dump for all the rubbish of Abidjan and its suburbs, this site has become a cemetery of detritus. Every day men, women and children live in close contact with this dump of dangerously toxic waste. Unaware of the risks, villagers continue to grow sweetcorn and okra in their fields, selling their produce on the market. Public authorities have looked the other way or are unaware of the consequence on the people’s health. This environmental catastrophe continues to claim victims at Akouédo – for the benefit of a healthy market economy.
