Release by Atelier EXB of the title Horses by Jane Evelyn Atwood, which presents a little-known part of the photographer’s work: her passion for horses. She presents it as follows:
Since I was very young, it has always been a love story between horses and me.
When we lived in Tennessee, it didn’t cost anything to ride horses and that’s where I learned to ride. Much later, I started show jumping.
But once in France, I became a photographer. There was no question of doing anything other than photography, especially not a sport where I risked breaking a leg and no longer be able to earn a living
After doing all the hard subjects I’m known for today, and especially after losing my best friend to a horrible and cruel illness, I no longer wanted to photograph sad things. I had had enough. I knew what I would find if I went to certain places. And I didn’t want to face it anymore.
In 2014 I was invited to an artist residency on the Island of Ouessant. It was in winter, the storms came one after the other, the wind never stopped blowing. Very few people there, but horses. I started taking photos of them and it was like a light bulb went on in my head.
Horses!
The story had always been there, but I had never tackled it.
