At the invitation of the French Institute – Alliance Française (FIAF) in New York, French photographer Sophie Calle will be presenting her ensemble made of five videos Voir la mer (3 minutes) on sixty-five gigantic advertising screens displayed on the world’s most famous crossroads. Films will be on screen until October, 31rd.
Voir la mer is an ensemble of five short film directed in Istanbul (Turkey) in 2011. “In Istanbul, a city surrounded by the sea, I met people who had never seen it. I filmed their first time, “she says in her films. The French artist simply accompanied inhabitants of the Turkish capital, living in more remote areas and not having the chance to see the sea, and capture their glance immediately after looking out the sea.
Although surrounded by the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, the city of Istanbul covers about 5000 km2 and has nearly 20 million inhabitants (15 million declared). A great number of inhabitants do not have the possibility to reach the coasts.
The sixty-five billboards are all located between 42nd Street and 49th Street, at the corner of Broadway and 7th Avenue.
