About Marco Castro :
I was born and raised in México City, where the mixture of cultures gave birth to the nation that we know as México. My grandmother was the last in my family who spoke fluent Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, Tribe that I identify with.
I Moved to New York City in 1993, here I have had the opportunity to collaborate with newspapers, magazines, and several news organizations, as well as literary publications.
As a freelance Photographer based in Brooklyn, New York on the fall of 2010, I embarked on a personal self/produced/assignment traveling to Kenya, East Africa. As part of my journey I visited the Turkana Tribe on the North West of Kenya, bordering Uganda, South-Sudan and Ethiopia. There, I was able to work and develop rapport with this ethnic group while capturing several images of their traditional culture. I published this body of work on my bilingual Spanish/English blog.
This project explores the living conditions of a not well-understood group of people known as the Turkana Tribe. As a nomadic herder Tribe so many things have been said that are far from the truth, they have been described as malnourished and unable to take care of themselves . Some sources are even citing hunger as the first ailment of the Tribe and described them dragging on the roads eating dirt as their only way of survival. This work describes the opposite.
