Artcurial and Natacha Dassault pay tribute to photographer Olivier Dassault on the occasion of Paris Photo 2023. From November 9 to 11, an exhibition entitled Expressions abstraites will present 40 silver gelatin photographs by Olivier Dassault at Artcurial. This tribute reflects his photographic journey, notably the last 15 years of photographs taken during his lifetime, on original medium.
Beyond the aesthetics of a work, what I like in art is the artist’s wish to share a vision, a feeling or a hope….
This is what I like in Olivier’s photographs, his taste for the moment and his joy of bringing people together to dialogue as he loved to do with his family and friends.
He practiced going beyond the stage of contemplation by juggling the light that had become material through his multiple exposures. His abstract photographs collaborate with the elements captured by a perceptual rendering of their meaning, a sort of projection into another dimension. A glow that outlines the curves of a subject, it’s this visual poetry that Olivier couldn’t help but capture. From this ray was born a variable geometry depending on inspiration and gesture. Mystery and questioning often surround the phenomenon of creation.
For him, the main thing was the encounter with the light. “The light that falls on an object, however innocuous it may be, becomes a guide. ” he said. I like to believe that his light remains.
