This sale features photographs ranging from the classic to the contemporary, from Brassaï (Lots 18 to 25) and Robert Mapplethorpe (Lots 46, 47) to Albert Watson (Lots 1 and 143).
Four lots in particular, from a private French collection, stand out. Lots 8, 9, 17 and 48 are vintage 1970s Helmut Newton photographs which belonged to one of Newton’s relatives. These unique and high-quality prints have never before been on the market. The same is true for the six Brassaï photographs from a private collection, and which promise to fetch high bids.
Contemporary photographers make a strong showing here, with a lovely piece by Rankin (Lot 35), and the large-format bestiary by Nick Brandt (Lots 100 to 104) that will delight young collectors.
It will be interesting to compare the results of the sale of Lot 13, André Kertész’s “Distortions” (1933) with another sale devoted to Kertész later that day at 16:00. This is a composition of 70 film prints made around 1974, mounted on cardboard and placed within the same frame.
Many nude photographers are included in the sale, with Patrick Demarchelier’s “Nude, New York” (1975, Lot 57). Prints by Helmut Newton and Dominique Issermann are expected to sell for 20,000€ and 30,000€, respectively.
The final highlight of the auction is Lot 29, a 1970s print of Man Ray’s “La Prière” (1930). It is signed by the artist in the lower righthand corner of the image. This is an exceedingly rare print. Will it find a buyer?
